“唐三彩,中国古代陶瓷烧制工艺的珍品,全名唐代三彩釉陶器,是盛行于唐代的一种低温釉陶器,釉彩有黄、绿、白、褐、蓝、黑等色,而以黄、绿、白三色为主,所以人们习惯称之为“唐三彩”。因唐三彩最早、最多出土于洛阳,亦有“洛阳唐三彩”之称▪1905年陇海铁路洛阳段修筑期间,在古都洛阳北邙山发现一批唐代墓葬,后来人们习惯地把这类陶器称为“唐三彩”,并且沿用至今,享誉中外

河南洛阳是唐三彩的最早发现地。1905—1909年,清政府修筑陇海铁路汴洛段时,在洛阳北邙山毁损了一批唐代墓葬,从这些的墓葬中发现了大量的唐三彩陶器。但由于古代文献中对唐三彩记载甚少,其价值最初并未被世人所识。直至这批三彩陶器流入到北京琉璃厂古董街后,引起了王国维、罗振玉等学者和一些古董商、外国人的重视。
